5. Holiday Gatherings

Holiday Dinner

Dr. Fauci understands the desire for people to socialize during the holidays. Being with family and friends to celebrate is part of the human experience. It’s what keeps us bonded to each other. However, large holiday gatherings are what can lead to surges and deaths. For the time being, to keep everyone safe, it’s best to keep celebrations to individual homes or social distance and wear masks.

4. Long-Term COVID Side Effects

Covid Symptoms Timeline

Dr. Fauci noted the evidence that there may be long-term adverse effects related to COVID infections, long after a person is no longer infected. Heart disease, fatigue, and other issues can remain even after a person seems as if they’ve recovered. The disease may not be a “one and done” type of illness. The effects may stay around for years and young, healthy people can also be affected.

3. School Reopenings

Dr. Fauci appreciates the difficult decisions that school districts must make when reopening schools. He recommends that school areas should open on a case-by-case basis, with states and districts evaluating the status of an outbreak in their area before reopening schools. Looking at how prevalent the infection is in a school’s community and keeping kids at home if the rate is high is the ideal approach. Flexibility allows schools to make decisions based on science.

2. Vaccine for COVID-19

Dr. Fauci sees positive news on the vaccine front. A safe and effective vaccine is the possible light at the end of the tunnel for the coronavirus pandemic. He sees encouraging information coming out of the current vaccine trials and is optimistic that a vaccine will be ready by the end of this year or early 2021. However, he does emphasize the need to have sufficient clinical trials prior to obtaining emergency approval for a vaccine.

1. Vitamins to Help Prevent and Infection

Vitamin D Supplementation

Dr. Fauci recommends taking vitamin D supplements to help boost your immune system. There may not be a 100% easy and effective way to prevent a COVID-19 infection. However, eating nutritious foods, staying fit, social distancing, wearing a mask, washing your hands, and — according to Dr. Fauci — taking vitamin D supplements can help lower your risk.
