Dark Chocolate

Some people find that consuming chocolate worsens their constipation. Research has not found a link between cocoa and constipation. However, milk chocolate may contribute to constipation due to the inclusion of milk. The sugar and caffeine that chocolate contains may also contribute to irregularity. Indulging in chocolate while excluding nutritious, fiber-rich foods from your diet may be the real culprit in this case.

6. Dairy


Dairy products are notorious for creating digestive problems in some individuals. Consuming milk and other dairy products may worsen stomach ailments, such as diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation. If you are suffering from any of these conditions, you may want to steer clear of dairy until you are feeling better. Lactose intolerance, or an inability to properly digest the proteins found in cow’s milk, is a common cause of either diarrhea or constipation. Individuals who lack the enzyme lactase find they are unable to digest milk and other dairy products easily.

5. Certain Prescription Drugs

Some prescription medications can cause constipation. Examples of these are heavy duty pain relievers containing codeine or morphine, antihistamines or anticholinergic drugs that are drying to the body, certain seizure medications, and some antidepressants and antipsychotics. You should never stop taking prescription medications without the guidance and advice of your doctor. However, if you suspect your medications are contributing to constipation, you will want to give your doctor a call. Drinking plenty of water and eating fiber-rich fruits and vegetables can help keep stool moving and relieve some of the symptoms of constipation.
