Research published in a 2018 Lancet issue found that drinking five glasses of wine a week was the estimated threshold for most people to avoid a higher risk of stroke, heart failure, or death. Drinking high levels of alcohol were comparable to the health effects of smoking. Consuming more wine than the recommended five glasses a week could even reduce life expectancy by roughly two years.
