3. Trump’s Defense of His Actions
Despite these dire decisions and acknowledgments, Trump continued to defend his decision and handling of the virus. He kept saying that his travel ban had been enacted early and saved many.
Although Fauci has tried to stay out of the limelight and avoids commenting on the Woodward interviews, he has admitted that “it may have happened” but then backpedaled to say that the discussions had not involved him. In his words, “I’m a small frame in the big picture of what goes on.”
Fauci went on to say, “I don’t want to get involved in the kind of stuff that is distracting to the kind of things I’m trying to do and we’re all trying to do with this outbreak.”
2. Fauci’s Statements About the President
Woodward’s book states that Fauci has said the following about President Trump: “His attention span is like a minus number, a separate channel.” He went on to say that the president changes the subject when challenged. Fauci is reported to have said that Trump’s “sole focus is to get reelected”.
In the interviews with Woodward, Fauci was also said to have stated he was disappointed that the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, continued to behave like a cheerleader for the president and acts “as if everything was great”.
1. Fauci’s Position with the Coronavirus Task Force
Initially, Fauci was a leading figure in Trump’s daily coronavirus task force, but over time he was sidelined as divisions with the president and his failure to handle the outbreak grew. Fauci has made it well know that he supported quarantines and has been outspoken in questioning many of Trump’s unproven remedies and medical statements.
The relationship between Trump and Fauci continued to cool until July, when an entire breakdown took place. The president started to become irritated and almost jealous of Fauci’s approval ratings.
From the beginning, Trump has made it sound like COVID-19 was not serious. The president ignored dozens of warnings issued by medical and intelligence officials. He also cut funding to public health agencies and set out to devalue medical experts like Fauci. Clearly, President Trump’s agenda has been to spread misinformation about COVID-19.
