Potato chips have never been a healthy option for any balanced diet, but having a snack here and there has never hurt anyone.

As it turns out, potato chips do have some nutritional value that help your body, such as potassium, salt, and vegetable oil. That being said, eating too many potato chips can actually be hurtful for your body. I know, big shocker.

The problem is that, just like drinking too much alcohol, there are more risks than you probably know. It’s not just about gaining a lot of weight, which will happen. But you can also suffer from other diseases, including infertility, depression, and even cancer. Here are some terrible side effects of eating potato chips.

8. Too Many Chips Can Raise Your Blood Pressure

Among the many issues from eating too many chips, raising your blood pressure is one of the most dangerous ones.

Potato chips contain a lot of sodium in each serving. It depends on the type of chips you’re eating, but potato chips contain anywhere from 170 to 205 milligrams of sodium per ounce. Even though you might argue that’s what makes them taste so good, too much sodium is dangerous for your body. High levels of sodium in your body can lead to high blood pressure, better known as hypertension, but it can also cause other diseases such as stomach cancer, osteoporosis, and kidney disease.

Believe it or not, overeating potato chips can lead to cancer, and in more ways than you’d imagine. According to the American Cancer Association, there’s a chemical called acrylamide that, according to different experts, can cause cancer. It can also be found in different kinds of foods, including, you guessed it, potato chips.

Acrylamide is also found in cigarettes, which, as you probably already know, is the number one risk factor for lung cancer. And just like with cigarettes, having too many chips increases your chances of getting cancer.

Not only that, but as we previously mentioned, because of the high levels of sodium, chips could increase your chances of getting stomach cancer.
