New COVID-19 strains have started to emerge nationwide, which has caused everyone to wear better masks to protect themselves and others from the virulent strains. They are focusing on masks that offer a better fit and filtration.

The new suggestions being put forth by the CDC about masks can reduce aerosol spread by as much as 95 percent. They are suggesting that everyone double up with masks. Wear a surgical mask and a cloth mask for maximum protection. To reaffirm the seal, they are suggesting that you wear a mask fitter or sleeve to prevent air gaps.

John T. Brooks, MD, the medical officer for the CDC’s COVID-19 response, states, “We know that universal masking works, and now these variants are circulating. Whatever we can do to improve the fit of the mask to make it work better, the faster we can end this pandemic.”

At this point, there are some circumstances where it is okay to wear only a simple mask, but in this article, we will look at the four leading places that it is prudent to wear an upgraded mask. You should either double layer the mask or wear a KN95 or N95 to offer maximum protection.

5. Wearing a Mask

When you are out in public, you have probably noticed that many people do not correctly wear a mask. They will often only cover their mouth or the mask will gap down. Honestly, any mask is better than no mask, but to be effective it must be worn correctly.

A mask needs to cover your mouth and nose. It should fit snugly with no gaps. If the straps of the mask are too loose then you can tie them, use hair clips, or even purchase mask clips to create a tighter fit.

You’ll encounter a variety of masks such as surgical masks, cloth face coverings, bandanas, KN95s, and N95s. Many people also wear complete face shields.

The CDC recommends sanitizing your hands when you put on a face mask and when you remove the mask. Once on, do not touch your mask. If you have to continually adjust it then it does not fit correctly and you’ll need another mask.

When using a hand sanitizer make sure it contains at least 60% alcohol for effectiveness.
