Talcum Powders

Talcum powder is an ingredient found commonly in baby powder, certain makeup products, and some lotions. While it is prevalent in these commonly used products, there are some concerns that talcum powder can be harmful to human health. It is true that exposure to talcum powder in the wrong ways can cause harm. Here are some examples.

5. Ovarian cancer

Ovarian Cancer

One alarming piece of information about talcum powder is that it may contribute to ovarian cancer. This may have something to do with the fact that some forms of talc, the base element in some talcum powders, may contain asbestos, which has become known as a carcinogen for humans, and thus can have adverse effects on our health. In the case of ovarian cancer, talcum powder that manages to enter the vagina and work its way through the fallopian tubes of the female reproductive system may end up affecting the ovaries.

4. Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer

The connection between talcum powder and lung cancer is similar to the previous regarding ovarian cancer. When inhaled, talc can get into the lungs where it can become problematic. The incidence of workers with constant exposure to asbestos due to their professions developing lung cancer makes this case. While the talc that is contained in modern cosmetics and baby powder is said to be free of asbestos, it’s still in your best interest to avoid inhaling it, as there have been lawsuits within the past two years regarding lung cancer related to such products.
