Even though COVID cases have started to go down around the US and the world, many experts expect a new surge of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the next few months. Many experts are waiting for a new spike and even a fourth wave coming in the next few months. Despite this, it’s possible that doctors will manage to keep things under control because of the COVID vaccine.

3. New COVID Variants Can Cause a Spike in the Next Month

Doctors are expecting a new spike in the United States that should be coming in April and May. This is due to the U.K. COVID variant that goes by the name of B.1.1.7.

As of right now, this U.K variant has been found in over 1880 cases in 45 out of the 50 states, and these numbers are only going to increase, according to virus expert Trevor Bedford of the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

“It’s going to increase in the spring. It could result in more of a wave in, say, April or May than we would have expected otherwise. But I still do suspect that things will be brought under control in the summer, and there will be very little virus circulating,” said Bedford.

Bedford isn’t the only one predicting a new spike. Dr. Josh Schiffer, an infectious diseases specialist at Fred Hutch said that a fourth wave of the pandemic is too difficult to prevent.

“I think with the newly infectious variants, I think it is going to be difficult to prevent a fourth wave altogether,” Schiffer said.

2. The Worst Is Yet to Come

Covid 19

Even though we’ve experienced some breathing room the last few weeks since COVID cases have dropped down recently, experts are saying that this is highly unlikely to continue in the next few weeks.

During an interview with CBS News, Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota and member of the White House’s COVID advisory board, said that the worst part of the pandemic is coming in the next 14 weeks.

“People don’t want to hear that, but if we look at what these variants are doing, particularly this one from the United Kingdom, and see what it did in Europe, see what it’s done in the Middle East, it’s now beginning to start that here in the U.S. We are going to see that unfold,” said Osterholm during the interview.

We’ve already seen the consequences of the new U.K. variant across Europe, as to how experts are saying that it’s more deadly than the first wave of the COVID pandemic. Because of this, experts are trying to keep this variant as controlled as possible, but it seems like, in spite of these efforts, there will be a new spike in the next few months. Fortunately, doctors believe we’ll be able to control it.
