When you set out on your dream vacation, you want everything to be perfect. When your dream vacation is a relaxing cruise to an exotic location, you expect sunshine, blue skies, and calm seas of sparkling water. The weather is not within your control. However, you can choose a cruise line that will deliver sumptuous, sanitary meals, pristine pools, and crisp, snowy white sheets when you climb into bed at night. As part of the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP), the CDC inspects cruise ships and scores them. A score of 86-100 is deemed satisfactory, while a score of 85 or less is not satisfactory. The following cruise lines have ships with a perfect score of 100.
10. Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean International comes out on top, with three cruise ships boasting a score of 100. These ships are Brilliance of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas, and Rhapsody of the Seas. All 24 of Royal Caribbean’s cruise ships have a score of 86 or above. The goal of the U.S. government VSP is to protect travelers from infection with gastrointestinal or foodborne illnesses while sailing on cruise ships. Cruise ships that are subject to unannounced inspections by the CDC are those that carry more than 12 passengers and travel between foreign destinations and ports in the United States.
9. Princess Cruises
Princess Cruises also scores well with the CDC, as this company has three ships with scores of 100 as well. These ships include Regal Princess, Sea Princess, and Star Princess. The Princess fleet is made up of 19 ships that travel to 380 locales on seven continents. The VSP Gastrointestinal Surveillance System keeps track of the number of crew and passengers that come down with stomach illnesses while on board. Illnesses that must be reported under this system include diarrhea as well as vomiting that is accompanied by diarrhea, muscle aches, headache, cramping, or fever.
