Laundry detergent, powdered or liquid, is a powerful cleaning agent that can be used for many household chores. For many of these uses, you only need a container or a bucket to blend that concentrated laundry detergent with water or with bleach to make a great household wash.
7. Pretreat Stains
You can put a dab of straight laundry detergent on your stained clothes, rugs, or window coverings. Use an older toothbrush to rub it in and then wash normally. It should disappear. On upholstery spots, use a dry detergent, rub it in with a damp cloth, give it a few minutes and then brush it off. It may need to be repeated more than once.
6. Washing Your Pride and Joy
Laundry detergent is great for washing your car. Just dilute one tablespoon of laundry detergent with water in your wash bucket. Now you’re ready to wash away that dirt and mud!
5. Unclog Drains
If you need to unclog a drain, before you call a plumber, try pouring 1/4 cup of liquid laundry detergent down the drain, then slowly pour one gallon of boiling water after the soap. It creates a slick, hot slippery feel to the pipes, flushing the clog right out.
4. All-Purpose Cleaning Solution
An all-purpose cleaner is something you can use all over the house instead of buying all these other bottles. Blend together 1/3 cup of bleach, one gallon of water, and one teaspoon of powdered detergent. Place the mix in several spray bottles. Keep these in your bathrooms and kitchen for daily cleaning.
3. Extra Strength Hand Cleaner
When your hands are extra dirty, greasy, or have paint on them, make an extra strength cleaner. Combine 1 teaspoon of liquid laundry detergent with 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil, mix, and rub onto your hands. Rinse with water and the oil will help the gunk slide right off.
2. Homemade Bubbles
When the kids run out of bottled bubble water for their playtime bubble guns, blend a teaspoon of liquid laundry detergent with water to refill those play guns. They can play for hours!
1. Get Rid of Ugly Driveway or Garage Oil Spills
Trying to get rid of those ugly oil spills is hard to do. When the oil is fresh, soak it up with powdered laundry detergent overnight, and then brush or wash off the stain. If these are old, dried up stains, dampen the stain with water, cover with liquid laundry detergent, work it over with a brush and let it sit overnight.
The next day, wash down or sweep out the area. If not totally disappeared, the still will at least be a lot less noticeable.
