Salt is an essential mineral our bodies need to survive. Most people eat or drink it every day. Table salt, also known as sodium chloride, has many more uses you might not know about. Check out the following ways to make salt an essential mineral in your home in surprisingly convenient ways.
7. Eliminate Mineral Deposits
If the water in your home has a high concentration of minerals (referred to as hard water), you’ll occasionally have calcium deposits develop in the drains. Calcium deposits can clog and erode pipes over time. Fear not, salt can help! Mix fine-grain table salt with vinegar and lemon juice to make a paste. Smear the paste on the calcium deposits and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Use an old toothbrush to scrub away the mineral deposits and rinse. Repeat the process, if needed.
6. Unclog Drains
While you’re using salt to clean away mineral deposits, you can use it to unblock any clogged drains. First, remove as much of the standing water from the sink basin as you can. Pour about a half cup of fine-grain table salt down the drain, followed by boiling water. Let the salt and boiling water work on the clog for a few minutes. Rinse the drain with the faucet. For tough clogs, you may need to repeat the process a few times until the drain is cleared.
