baking soda

Baking soda is a must-have item in most of our kitchens. Not only is it helpful for many tasks around the kitchen, including cooking and baking, but you can also use it as a disinfectant, to absorb odors, and even as a fire extinguisher.

Yes, baking soda is wonderful, but it won’t be as helpful if you don’t store it properly. Most of the time, the boxes baking soda comes in don’t have a way to seal them again. Leaving baking soda in an open space isn’t the best way to make your baking soda last longer. Instead of keeping it in the box, this is the best way to store baking soda.

3. Why Do You Need to Store Baking Soda?

Baking Soda

As we mentioned before, baking soda has many different uses around the house, and we’re not only talking in the kitchen. There are many ways you can use baking soda in your day-to-day life. You can even use baking soda as your home dentist. Yes, really.

Likewise, baking soda is great for absorbing smells around the house. If that’s what you’re using it for, then great. More power to you! But if you want to use baking soda for baking, you don’t want it catching any odors from other places. Or else, you may taste those odors later in your food. Yikes!

But baking soda won’t be as effective if you don’t store it properly. If you leave baking soda in an open box, not only will it lose its potency, but you’ll be wasting it entirely. Baking soda starts to lose its potency after the first six months, even though the date on the box may say its expiration is a year or so away.

2. The Best Place to Store Baking Soda

Instead of leaving it in the box, store your baking soda in any jar you have around your house. This will make your baking soda last longer and be handier when you need it. If possible, try to use a jar with a shaker lid, so it’s easier and more practical to use.

It doesn’t have to be a jar per se. You can use any other airtight receptacle you have available. Just make sure it’s an airtight and moisture-proof container. Otherwise, it won’t do the trick.

It’s not just about where you store it, but where you put it as well. Try to keep it in a cool place that won’t be affected by moisture. The cooler and dryer the place, the better.

1. What You Need to Do Before Storing Baking Soda

First, make sure the recipient you’re using is completely clean. Again, try to keep your baking soda away from containers and places where it can absorb odors. Make sure the container is completely odor-free.

As we mentioned before, make sure it’s also dry and airtight. This is important to preserve the complete integrity of your baking soda.

Now that all that’s covered, it’s time to pour your baking soda from the box into the airtight container or jar. After you store it, you can use it every time you need to cook or clean. Although, try to avoid cleaning these items with baking soda.
