For people looking to get their daily coffee fix, K-Cups have become incredibly popular. However, there are those who believe these tiny, tasty cups aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. In one German city, K-Cups have been banned.
According to CNN, Hamburg has officially banned coffee pods from all government buildings due to their negative environmental impact. You might be wondering, is your Keurig that bad? Well, sort of.

4. They Produce a Lot of Waste
Although they’re little and might seem harmless, these small pods can pile up fast in the trash bin. For every six grams of coffee, there are about three grams of waste, far less efficient than sticking with a traditional brew. In 2014, Mother Jones estimated that K-Cups were disposed of so much that they could be wrapped around the world 10.5 times.

In an effort to make these pods eco-friendly, Keurig has promised to make their cups recyclable, but not until 2020. Until then, you will have to manually remove the aluminum top from the plastic cup and find a special recycling service.
