A Swedish study in the journal Stroke assessed nearly 400,000 people and found that eating fish three or more times a week could help reduce the risk of stroke by 6 to 12 percent. Researchers suggest that the omega-3 fats in fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel reduce inflammation in the arteries, which ultimately improves blood flow and decreases the chance of blood clots. By eating more fish, you also consume less red meats and processed meats, which contain artery-clogging saturated fats.
A great way to lower your LDL cholesterol or “bad” cholesterol is to simply eat oatmeal. High cholesterol is also known to build up plaque in the blood vessels around the brain, which increases the risk of an ischemic stroke. Aim to get 20 grams of soluble fiber a day to keep your cholesterol levels in check.
