4. Synthetic Hormones (rBGH and rBST)
Where it’s found: Milk and dairy products
Why it’s bad: Cows treated with synthetic hormones can become infertile and develop an inflamed udder. Those same hormones have been linked to breast, colon, and prostate cancer development in humans. Look for organic or hormone-free milk and dairy products.

Where it’s found: Cereal, gum, butter, meat, mixed nuts
Why it’s bad: These chemicals help keep food from becoming rancid. Ideally, this is a good thing. However, these chemicals have shown to cause cancer in rats. It’s unclear yet if they cause cancer in humans, but it’s really not worth the risk.
Where it’s found: Poultry
Why it’s bad: Arsenic in chicken feed promotes growth and boosts pigmentation, which in turn makes the chicken flesh look much pinker. Arsenic is classified as a human carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency.
1. Brominated Flour
Where it’s found: Wraps, rolls, flatbread, bagel chips, bread crumbs
Why it’s bad: Made with the same harmful chemical as brominated vegetable oil, brominated flour helps with decreasing baking time and cost. However, the convenience also puts you at risk for kidney damage, cancer, and nervous system damage. The choice is yours.Related: 10 Poisons Consumed Daily
