Canola Oil

If you’re one of the many people who think canola oil is one of the “good” oils, you might want to think again. Canola oil is commonly advertised as healthy and is popular because of its low price, but this oil isn’t doing your body any good. Recent research has pointed out that the use of canola oil has a negative impact on the brain and other parts of the body.

While many people associate memory problems with aging, there are plenty of steps you can take to slow down memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer’s. And diet plays an incredibly important role.

Scientists Elisabetta Lauretti and Domenico Pratico conducted an experiment in 2017 that focused on the effects of canola oil on mice, and the impact it had on health and memory, compared to the olive oil diet that is common in Mediterranean countries. The two scientists tested their theory out by giving one group of mice the canola diet and the other group a controlled diet. Lauretti and Pratico concluded that the canola diet had a severe negative effect on the mice, especially on their memories.

Why Canola Oil Is Not a Healthy Choice

The Mediterranean diet that the scientists implemented in their study consists of mainly fruits and vegetables, as well as the frequent use of olive oil. Per health experts, the diet has a track record of reducing the likelihood of cardiovascular diseases as well as metabolic syndrome. Cognitive functions are also said to improve with the diet.

Countries with a non-Mediterranean diet were so impressed with the results that they decided to promote the diet in their jurisdiction, but since olive oil is more expensive than other cooking ingredients, they decided to explore the use of canola oil and see whether it was a good replacement. Lauretti and Pratico’s study has provided evidence that canola oil is not a viable option to replace olive oil.

One of the most significant facts from Lauretti and Pratico’s study was that dietary habits played an important role in overall behavior and functionality, especially when it comes to Alzheimer’s. While the study provided important evidence, it is important to note that the study was inconclusive since it was not tested on humans.
