Obesity, type 2 diabetes, tooth decay and heart disease can be linked to a diet full of beverages with added sugar. The American Heart Association claims that just one sugary drink per day could significantly raise our risk of heart disease or stroke, especially for women. Replacing drinks like soda, sweetened fruit juice and sweet powdered drink mixes with lime water could go a long way toward improving and maintaining your health.

Nothing can replace the benefits of drinking plenty of pure water, which is essential for staying healthy. Yet if lime water is appealing enough to encourage people to drink more water overall, that’s a big step toward achieving great hydration. Harvard School of Public Health explains that proper hydration is important for many reasons. It helps you “regulate body temperature, keep joints lubricated, prevent infections, deliver nutrients to cells, and keep organs functioning properly. Being well hydrated also improves sleep quality, cognition, and mood.” So, keep the lime water coming! And notice all the ways it helps you feel your best.

Have you heard of hydroxycitric acid? According to WebMD, it’s “a chemical similar to citric acid” found in the rind of fruits like limes. Recent studies of hydroxycitric acid in mice suggest it can cause a decrease in enzymes that produce fat, plus help suppress the appetite. Though more studies are needed to confirm hydroxycitric acid’s effectiveness for weight loss, the latest results indicate that lime water might help. And losing weight is certainly easier when you choose lime water over high calorie drinks.
